It is but obvious that employees will need leaves for celebrating Christmas and the New Year with their friends and family. This is a special occasion where they get to spend time with loved ones and also rejoice in the festivities. But if your leave isn’t approved by the company or if you have pending tasks, then it could turn out to be a major mood spoiler.

Follow these tips to ensure that you are able to manage your leaves during the holiday season. If you are employed in an IT firm, then these tips will prove to be life savers for you as IT work never seems to come to an end and you are required to be available for getting the work done.

Delegate, Prioritize and Stay Calm

Don’t be under the misconception that you can get all of the work completed on your own. Everything is a team effort and you need to ensure that your deliverables are kept ready as per the decided schedule. Prioritize your tasks and work on them individually. Working on all the tasks simultaneously will create a complete mess, especially when you have to work under the stress of getting the tasks completed on time. Talk to your team members and delegate some tasks if feasible. But most importantly, stay calm. If you are constantly under stress, then you would not be able to give the output that is expected from you.

Plan Your Work Well Ahead of the Leave

If your work is still pending, then the chances of your leave application getting approved is very less. Talk to your seniors about the expected work load and do your best to manage them properly. Keep backup plans ready so that last minute delays may be accommodated easily. If you are a team leader or a manager, then talk to your team and stay updated about the current work progress.

Keep Realistic Expectations

It is good to keep expectations as long as they are based on realistic considerations. Don’t increase your expectations to the point that if they are not met, your work gets affected. The best way to manage this is to keep low or no expectations and just work towards completing your tasks. Try not to get in the wrong books of your senior and / or the boss. This could greatly reduce the chances of your leave application getting approved.

Be Prepared to Work from Home

Although it is not mandatory, but there could be tasks that come up during your leave. Minor tasks can be assigned to other employees or the task’s completion could be delayed. But for tasks that are really important, you need to keep yourself available to work from home. No one likes to get disturbed during a leave. So talk to your boss and let him know the preferred time when you can make yourself available for work in case of urgent requirements.

Stay Flexible

The work load during the holiday season can be relatively high. If it is not possible to get things done during the regular office hours, then remain flexible. This is the best way in which you can ensure that the work is completed. Plus, you probably won’t have any pending work during your leave.

Apply for Leave At Least 2-3 Weeks in Advance

Ideally, you should apply for leaves at least 2-3 weeks in advance. Don’t wait till the last minute to apply. You need to let your employer know about your planned leave so that the work is managed accordingly. This will also let you know if your chances of getting the leave approved are slim.

Interestingly 15% of employees do not take time off for vacation despite the fact that they get paid leaves. So unless you come in this category, it is time to plan your work so that your leave application is approved easily.
